It rained here last night, stormed I think, and is now nice and cool today; almost chilly! My magnolia tree has many buds on it and the first blossom on it opened a day or so ago; I should have gotten a picture of it then because I think it doesn’t look as good today after all the rain. Can’t wait for all the other buds to open up. Southern Magnolias are so pretty I think and I love to use the leaves, especially at Christmas and other times of the year to decorate with.

However I still noticed something in one of my other beds that to me is in the
“why won’t it die” category!

Four years ago when doing these beds around the house, a gardener friend dug up some stuff for us to use to help fill in the beds until some of the smaller plants could grow….one of them was purple basil; she might have called it creeping purple basil and I should have paid attention to the “creeping” part! It grew prolifically that first year and at the end of the summer, I pulled it all up because it seemed to be taking over everything. At least I “thought” I had pulled it all up…..it has come back every spring since then. I pull it up every time I see any more sprouts in that particular bed so I don’t understand why it keeps coming back. Just when I think I have it all, I go out and there are more of them! Don’t know if it will show up in this pic or not but this is what it looks like when small; if left alone, it will get huge and out of control!

I am ready for it to be all gone so that I don’t have to keep looking for it and pulling it up all the time! Now that I’ve taken a picture, I’ll have to remember to get back out there and pull up all those sprigs before they get too big. I so dislike yard work! At least someone else mows for us now, and it got done on Monday so I’m always glad for that, but there is always something else to be done in the yard or the planters; but with it being chilly and dreary, I think it will have to wait for another day!

I love magnolias too, they are so pretty. Good picture 🙂

Why don’t you like the creeping basil? Isn’t it like ground cover? I bet it looks pretty, has a pretty color and doesn’t it spread out and cover the ground? Why don’t you like it?

You may never be able to pull it all up, you might have to till that flower bed to get it all up. Ask your Master Gardner friend how to get rid of it 🙂

It doesn’t spread out on the ground, grows tall and is invasive and spreads!

very pretty. glad they are opening up. for some reason, i remember playing around the magnolia tree a lot. and i liked taking those seeds or whatever they are out of the open buds and put them in my hand or a pile. weird.

Elizabeth – the house where I grew up, there was a huge magnolia tree next door. I used to play under it too. Often with the big leaves, or those seed pods. I love pulling the seeds out and messing with them. Sometimes, I’d play “Little House on the Prairie” and pretend I was a prairie girl. Great minds must think alike, even in childhood 🙂
