DVD - Spanglish

We had a free rental coupon from Blockbuster a couple of weekends ago and I decided to take a chance on this movie. I had heard/read mixed reviews on it. It lists Adam Sandler as the "star", but really, he's just a fixture in the background, calm and passive, not his usual comedic self.

This movie revolves around Sandler's wife Deborah, played superbly neurotic by Tea Leoni, and Paz Vega, a Mexican woman who has come to the US with her daughter to provide her with a better life. The story unfolds around Deborah and her daughter Bernice, and Flor (Vega) and her daughter Cristina.

This movie is a bit quirky for us, outside of our normal escapism/entertainment type films we normally enjoy. Having said that, we did like it, but I won't give it a rave review. It had a sort of unresolved ending, and that normally really turns me off of a movie. But, as Tim and I discussed after it was over, it was really warranted in this case, and anything other than the ending that we saw would have detracted from the story they were trying to tell, and the points they were trying to make.

A decent rental, but I'm not sure we would have rented it if we hadn't had that free coupon! :) We won't buy this one to add to our collection. Still, if you're up for something different, with dialogue and a female-centric story to tell, you should rent it :)
